Lights, action, roll-’em! In this case, roll ’em took on two meanings…the movie reels rolled and the cars did, too- they rolled right up to the action on the big screen at this Curious George at the Drive-In Movie party! Birthday Boy Luke loves George, and so his mom requested a Curious George party~ and she wanted the main activity to be a Curious George movie on the outdoor movie screen! So, here it is…all “rolled” into one!
Mom, Beth, wanted the cake to be a fantastic display of color and cuteness. With stripes, dots, and George as the topper, the cake wowed Luke and his guests!
The cake was on display with several adorable cookie designs to coordinate with the theme~ and the table was dressed up with the cutest glittered and fringed banana bags hung on a ripped fabric garland…
To go along with the sugary sweetness of cookies and cake, we also served Chex Mix in these fantastic cones…
I wanted these to have the effect of Curious George in a car, and so I covered a wooden drawer with striped wrapping paper and added wheels and headlights~
At the other end of the table, I had a matching car with number 5 lollipops. This party took place during Hurricane Issac, and the humidity was sky-high. I kept the lollipops covered to keep away yellow jackets, and when I tried to take it off, it wouldn’t budge. They were a study in sugar, heat, and humidity by the end of the party!
Birthday Boy Luke loves to spell- I knew this because he almost chose a “Super Why” theme for his party. After spending just a bit of time with Luke, you will hear how much he loves to spell! I knew I wanted to “spell” out his name at the party and so I used red paper fans to spell his name and displayed the letters on corkboards on easels…
Curious George in a little red car became the focal point of my party design. I had seen cardboard boxes used as cars for outdoor movies, and I knew that was a “must-have”. I painted 12 little boxes red and decorated them…and topped off each one with a genuine “car hop” tray~
The cars were so much fun! Each had a yellow “Duck Tape” racing stripe, candy cup headlights with a tulle pom inside each, a customized license plate, yellow paper plate wheels with black crepe paper tread, and tail lights.
Having the names on each box was a great way to make sure everyone had a seat for the show! (We had to put tarps down due to the wet grass.)
Each tray had a piece of red and white striped wrapping paper on it- and so did each “floorboard” of the cars.
After the short movie, it was time to enjoy cake!
It was a yellow cake with chocolate chips! That was a special request from the birthday boy!
The guests also enjoyed a visit from the Man with the Yellow Hat and pretending to be George themselves!
There was also time for a pinata and for playing on the playscape (complete with a birthday rock climbing wall), and then the guests were treated to a fabulous favor table!
The favor table was packed with treats for the guests and was draped with glittered and fringed banana treat bags for the small items. It was also decorated with wooden blocks to spell out Luke’s name- a cute decoration to use in his bedroom as a keepsake of his 5th birthday!
Mom Beth loved showering Luke’s friends with treats…these boxes are filled with cupcake mix for the families to make and enjoy together at home. I love the personalization!
These polka-dot chocolate lollipops were dressed in Curious George wrappers and displayed in small jars of candy…
Along with bubbles, bottle cap necklaces, blow horns, banana crayons, and more, the children each received a Curious George book to enjoy reading.
And, many cookies were saved to take home!
It was such a fun day to celebrate Luke! Miraculously, we had just enough time for the party before Hurricane Issac dropped torrential rain on us! A perfect day, indeed!
As a side note, Luke decided to request that his friends bring dog treats to donate to the local shelter instead of traditional birthday gifts. Luke and his friends donated 26 bags of dog treats, and Luke made the front page of our local paper! How exciting for Luke, his friends, and the pups!
Thank you for letting me be a part of your family’s special day, Beth and David! Happy Birthday, Luke!
